MAWE Lutein is a natural pigment supplement that strengthens the yellow colour factor in canaries and other yellow birds. It gives a lively, deep and even yellow tone in the new plumage.
You give it during the moult, when the new feathers are formed. That is the only moment when the colour can still be influenced: once a feather is there, it does not change. Anyone going to a show decides in those weeks how his birds will look at the judging.
The pigment is dissolved in warm water and mixed through the egg food, roughly 10 to 15 grams per kilo of dry egg food. The full method — dosage, dissolving, preparing and giving — is set out step by step below.

From weighing out to giving, in four steps.
What you need
- MAWE Lutein, 10 to 15 grams at a time
- 1 kilogram of dry egg food
- Water to moisten the egg food, part of it warm
- A precision scale to weigh accurately
- A mixing bowl for 1 kg of egg food and a whisk or spoon
Decide on your dosage
10 grams per kilo of dry egg food is a safe starting point.
Experienced breeders sometimes work with 4 to 8 grams, depending on the bloodline and on the result they want. Start at 10 grams, see how the colour comes out during the moult, and adjust over the next seasons until you have found your own amount.
Dissolve the lutein in warm water
Weigh out the chosen amount accurately. Heat a small amount of water to at least 40 °C — hand-warm to a little warmer.
Put the lutein into that warm water and stir vigorously until everything has dissolved completely. You want a clear, concentrated colour solution without grains or sediment. This step decides whether the colour will spread evenly later on.
Mix the solution through the egg food
Put 1 kilogram of dry egg food in the mixing bowl and pour the dissolved lutein over it gradually, so that you moisten the egg food with it straight away.
Then mix thoroughly. The yellow solution has to be spread evenly through the whole kilo; only then do you get an even colour deposit in the new feathers.
Give it during the moult
Start with the coloured egg food before the moult and keep it up throughout the whole moulting period, for as long as new feathers are being formed.
The egg food is now moist and therefore spoils faster. Only prepare what your birds eat in one day.
Storage
Keep the lutein in a cool, dark place, for example in the cellar. The fridge works too, but the cold can make the product syrupy. In that case add a little water to make it easy to dose again.
